Senate Ready to Renew Patriot Act
Associated Press
The terror-fighting USA Patriot Act moved a step toward renewal Thursday when the Senate overwhelmingly rejected an attempt by Sen. Russell Feingold to stop it until more civil liberties safeguards are added.
David is going to write on this later today, so I will confine my rant to a few remarks.
This story starts off with our "free press" cheerleading a tool of repression and lying about its purpose. The "Patriot" Act does not fight terror, never did, never will. So far it has not put a single terrorist in jail with its provisions. And administration claims to the contrary, I doubt it has stopped a single terrorist attack that would not have been stopped with the laws and procedures already in place prior to 9/11.
The 96-3 vote was no suprise even to Feingold, who said he would try to offer several amendments to strengthen the legislation's curbs on government power. But even as he prepared them, he complained that Republicans are unlikely to allow votes on them — a development, he said, that rendered the debate "a sham."
Congress is racing to renew 16 provisions of the law that are set to expire March 10. Voting no on the motion to limit debate were Feingold and Sen. Jim Jeffords, I-Vt., along with Sen. Robert Byrd, D-W.Va.
Just yesterday Hilary Clinton was prattling on about Bush and his secret goverment, yet she (and MANY other Dems) turns right around and votes to give these criminals all the tools they need to contniue with their construction of a police state. Why do they do this? Because they firmly believe they won't win re-election since they are "soft" on terrorism.
